Cross Platform Games: Not that long ago, the thought of cross-platform online multiplayer between Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo sounded like a pipe dream. In the past year or so, thanks to games like MinecraftFortnite, and Rocket League, competitors have realized that supporting cross-platform games is a win for all (Sony only realized this in late 2018, but better late than never). It has even found a home on mobile platforms, with iOS and Android players enjoying games together and expanding the player-base for free-to-play games, as well. Not all cross-play games support the feature on every system, however, with certain titles leaving out Nintendo Switch, Stadia, or PC.

While the feature is still in its infancy, it will likely continue to expand in the coming years. Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare supported cross-play right from its launch, Dauntless has been surging as the first game to have full cross-platform support at launch, and more are likely to follow in its footsteps as we move deeper into. Cross-play will even likely be possible with certain games on next-generation systems like PS5 and Xbox Series X, the latter of which won’t be getting true exclusive games for at least a year. Games still separate players based on control input, as well, so console players won’t be at a disadvantage against PC players who use a mouse and keyboard.

Not that long ago, the thought of cross-platform online multiplayer between Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo sounded like a pipe dream. In the past year or so, thanks to games like MinecraftFortnite, and Rocket League, competitors have realized that supporting cross-platform games is a win for all (Sony only realized this last year, but better late than never). Cross-platform play is a beneficial feature for everyone, and it’s only continuing to get bigger as console manufacturers begin putting aside their differences to build larger gaming communities.

While the feature is still in its infancy, it’ll likely continue to expand in coming years. Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will support cross-play when it launches later this month, Dauntless has been surging as the first game to have full cross-platform support at launch. Games still separate players based on control input, as well, so console players won’t be at a disadvantage against PC players who use a mouse and keyboard.

Right now, only a handful of games support full crossplay across all platforms, but the list is likely to grow in the future.

  • Fortnite: PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, mobile
  • Dauntless: PS4, Xbox One, PC
  • Rocket League: Xbox One, Switch, PC, PS4
  • SMITE: Xbox One, Switch, PC, PS4 (September 17)
  • Paladins: Champions of the Realm: Xbox One, Switch, PC, PS4
  • Realm Royale: Xbox One, Switch, PC, PS4 (October)
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Xbox One, PS4, PC (October 25)

Many games support crossplay for some platforms, but not all. One of the most popular multiplayer games around, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, is getting crossplay in October for PS4 and Xbox One. It’s the latest high profile game to catch onto the crossplay trend, and one of the few that has PS4/Xbox One cross-platform support.

What Games Are Cross Platform

What Games Are Cross Platform

One of the largest games to support cross-play is coming very soon with Activision’s big release in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, but there are a bunch of games that support cross-play between the Xbox, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and of course… the PC. It’s not all fun and games (heh) but there are full cross-platform supporting games that I will list, and partial cross-platform support in games.

The folks over at DigitalTrends made a great list of all games supporting cross-platform, and split them into platforms. It’s a big list, and it’ll continue to grow. But for now… this is what you can expect — with a note that some of them aren’t out yet, with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare launching on October 25.

Best Cross Platform Games

This point in time has never been better for gamers. With amazing technological capabilities, the games we play have never been more beautiful, fun, or addictive.

Another great aspect of modern gaming is the accessibility factor for cross-platform games. Cross-platform means that many titles are available for multiple systems at once, and can be played online using different consoles, namely for Xbox, PS4, and PC.

Imagine it: you and your friends want to play Fortnite together, but one of your friends doesn’t have a good gaming PC or an Xbox. Can Xbox and PS4 play Fortnite together? They can, and it’s a great example of cross-platform games.

Cross-platform is still in its early stages, and few games cover all platforms. There are only 3 games currently supporting all platforms.

You may ask yourself, what games are currently cross-platform? What are the best cross-platform games? Luckily for you, I have compiled a list to let you know all of that and more.

Xbox Pc Cross Platform Games

Want to play the latest FPS, MMO, or frantic cooking video game with your friends? With online capabilities for games getting bigger than ever, it’s never been easier to pick and play with people all over the world – though the growth of cross-play looks set to break down one of the last major barriers to players stuck on different gaming platforms.

Some might not see the fuss around cross-play; after all, don’t you have enough people to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare with on just your PS4?

But it’s become increasingly clear that we have the technological ability to play cross-platform games, especially as PlayStation and Xbox consoles share pretty similar processing architecture (and are basically dedicated gaming PCs). In the months after the release of a big online game, too, player numbers tend to dwindle, and being able to expand team matchmaking across platforms can be a big boon to both dedicated fans and the longevity of the game itself.

We know some publishers like Ubisoft are looking to make all of their PvP games cross-play, and that trend is only set to continue. So if you’re after cross-play games that don’t limit you to one platform, here’s our in-depth guide to all the ones you need.

Games That Are Cross Platform

Cross-play is the ability to play an online video game across more than one platform – meaning someone playing Fortnite on Nintendo Switch could be on the same server as someone using an Xbox One – as well as allowing players to access their player data from those different consoles.

Big-name games that focus on broadly accessible play are the most likely to support cross-play, such as the battle royale game Fortnite, or the building block simulator Minecraft.

However, this is by no means common practice across the board – not helped by the push for exclusive games across all platforms, which prevents there being as much of a glut of titles with the potential for cross-play.

There are a few major players leading the charge here. Microsoft’s Play Anywhere initiative means that many Xbox titles, once bought, can also be played on PC. Given Microsoft develops both the Xbox platform and the Windows operating system, this seems pretty straightforward – and enables cross-play on some (though not all) Play Anywhere games.

We’re seeing growth of cross-play in AAA games between Xbox and PlayStation – and despite the latter lagging behind on this front, progress is being made.

But there is a development cost to including cross-play; hence why you don’t see it across the board. If the code for a game isn’t written to allow play of this kind, it’s not that simple to introduce retrospectively either.

Can you play online between Xbox and PlayStation?

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has announced cross-platform play for the first time. Essentially, that means that PlayStation players will now be able to play against Xbox One owners for (pretty much) the first time ever.
