Pc cooling requires some forethought, but is vital to get the best performance from your hardware. Demanding workloads generate heat, and overheating causes components to slow down or shut down. A good cooling setup keeps everything at a cool temperature to avoid this and ensures that your PC continues to work properly.
The CPU and GPU are the main sources of heat in a computer, but just about anything that uses electricity will generate some heat as well. This includes RAM, power supplies, and storage drives. All of these can cause overheating if they are used under heavy load, or if the user overclocks the CPU (a popular practice with gamers).
Airflow is essential to keeping heat levels low. This is why it’s important to use a case with plenty of open space, and have multiple intake and exhaust fans in place. A good rule of thumb is that the case should have one fan blowing cool air towards the GPU in the front, and another fan pushing hot air away from it on the top or rear.
Most cases also come with a CPU heat sink and fan that disperses the heat, but this is not enough for a demanding PC. Additional cooling is needed, and this can be accomplished with liquid coolers or air coolers. Liquid coolers have the advantage of providing almost silent operation and high efficiency, but they can have a higher price tag than air cooling options.
